Study by Topic: A Brief Demonstration       A Study Pattern     "Spontaneous Quoting"

The purpose of this page is to encourage you to memorize Holy Scriptures. When our Lord Jesus was on earth He studied the Holy Scriptures very diligently. At the age of twelve years He astounded the doctors and teachers of the law with His knowledge of the scriptures!

Copy of Jesus & The Teachers.jpg (70829 bytes)

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness he defeated the devil because He depended on His Heavenly Father - and He used the word of God to defeat the devil! (for example: "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4).

As we are involved in the battle, the Great Controversy between Christ and satan, it is extremely crucial that we study God's words, so we can defeat the devil ... God's words are powerful, God's words are sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb. 4:12)... so, let us study!

"Study to show thyself approve d unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth". 2 Timothy 2:15

You can download and use the following files to print study cards.  These are intended as just a small sample. You can, of course, make cards of your own using the same files or other (or, you may be able to purchase ready-made cards) ... relate them to various topics as you continue to study.  You will be richly Blessed ... you won't regret it one bit!

Study Card- Side Two

Study Card- Side One

One scripture memorization giant recommends the following study pattern:

  1. Quote each verse in the first set of cards aloud 7 times daily for 1 week.

  2. The second week this can be reduced to 2 times per day.

  3. The third week 1 time per day should suffice.

  4. Add a second (new) set of cards in the second week and review the verses 7 times daily (while reviewing the first set twice daily).

  5. By the 4th week the original set of cards/verses would need to be reviewed only once weekly.

  6. Continue this process for 3 months.

  7. Then do a monthly refresher of the verses.

  8. When a set of cards / verses are completely mastered a review once every 3 months might be necessary.

  9. Start with a new set of cards, following the same sequence, all the while doing your scheduled revision of the first set of verses.

**Of course, you might know of a method that can work better for you OR, you may wish to develop your own system. Whatever you do remember - it takes time and dedication to get scripture riveted in our minds...and remember...God is ready to help you in this endeavor. God Bless!

There are various ways of memorizing scripture and one of the best and most used is to study by subject / topic.

Study by Topic: A Brief Demonstration

The following is a continuous narrative intended to show how different Biblical topics relate to each other and how a deep study and memorization of the scripture can enhance your witness by empowering you to link various topics (references and / or quotations or partial quotes AND comments or paraphrases  are given from the King James Version of the Holy Bible. In this demonstration one topic is used as the ANCHOR to the others).

(The Sabbath) Genesis 2:2,3: Tells us that God ended His work of the creation of the world and then He created the Sabbath day: "On the seventh-day He rested from all His work that He had created and made."  "Therefore the Lord blessed the Seventh day and sanctified it." Exodus 20:8-11: tells us about one of the Ten Commandments (the Decalogue), the fourth: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God, in it thou shalt not do any work; thou nor thy son nor thy daughter,  thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." Jesus said in Mark 2:27: "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath." Man was made before the Sabbath. The Sabbath is for our blessing and to enhance our relationship with our Maker as we spend time with Him (one special day in seven). Our Saviour is our perfect example and as such, He kept the Sabbath: In Luke 4:16 the scripture says: "And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath Day and stood up for to read." Isaiah 66:22, 23 tells us that the Sabbath will be observed continually in the New Earth: "From one Sabbath to another and from one new moon to another shall all flesh come to worship before me."  (The Sabbath is as eternal and unchangeable as the God that gave it for the benefit of man).   The Sabbath is a sign between us and God. It shows to the world that we are following what God commands ... Ezekiel 20:12, 20.

(The Ten Commandments / Decalogue) The seventh-day Sabbath is a part (the heart) of the Decalogue found in Exodus 20:1-17 and therefore, any scripture on the Commandments can be used to support the Sabbath. After all, the Commandments are like an orange - once you take out or break a peg you have a broken the orange! .... Speaking of the commandment James says:  For whosoever shall keep the whole law and yet offend in one point, shall be guilty of all  (James 2:10).  The Apostle Paul speaks volumes about the Law of God. For example, in Romans 8:14 he writes: "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandments holy and just and good."  David says that the law of the Lord is perfect (Psalm 40:8). (Sin) Moreover, sin is defined as the breaking of the law ... 1 John 3:4 tells us "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law, for sin is the transgression of the law." ... and we are told by the Apostle Paul in Romans 6:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God." But thank God, Paul also writes: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23) Praise the Lord!!  (Salvation) When we sin we deserve death ... but God's gift to us is life! He wants us to live ... not die!  The Bible says: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Moreover, the Bible says that God wants us not just to have life ... but abundant life! (Abundant Living) (John 10:10) "The thief cometh not but for to steal and to kill and to destroy; but I am come that they might have life and have it more abundantly"!  (Hell) Also, we are told that hellfire is not for us humans, but for "... the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41).

(Moral Law Before Sinai) The commandments were kept and known by mankind from time immemorial (the Bible says that Cain was a murderer in the book of Genesis and the scripture says - as part of the commandments Exodus 20:1 - 17 -  "Thou shalt not kill"). The book of Genesis also tells us that Abraham was a man of faith, and that he kept God's commandments to show his faith in God! The Bible says that God says of Abraham "And Abraham obeyed my commandments, my statutes and my laws." (Genesis 26:5). (Grace) Did you notice that Genesis 6:8 says that "... Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord"? If there was no law there could be no sin (Sin) (1 John 3:4: "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law, for sin is the transgression of the law") and with no sin, there would be no need for grace "Where sin doth abound grace doth much more abound"). Genesis 6 tells us that man's heart was desperately wicked and that their thoughts were "evil continually". Some people are saying that the law is done away with.  Many say this just to get away from the command to keep the seventh-day holy. That's sad.

(Change of the Sabbath) One of the greatest evils instigated by the devil and developed in the heart of man is the lie that the Seventh-day Sabbath was changed. Was it changed? Daniel 7:25 tells of a power that would "Think to change times and laws".  Jesus himself (our perfect example, our Saviour and Lord) said: "Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets, for I am not come to destroy but to fulfil. Till Heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law" (Matthew 5:17,18).  Moreover, Jesus also said "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:9). Whom should we follow? Jesus or commandments of men? Do you really love Jesus (do I?) then we should keep his commandments (John 14:15: Jesus said: "If ye love me keep my commandments").  If we do not keep His commandments we are liars (1 John 2:4: "He that saith I know Him and keepeth not His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him") ... and if we do not keep His commandments we are not Jesus' friend (John 15:14: Jesus said: "You are my friends if you do whatsoever I command you").  Some are saying that they have the (The Holy Spirit / Fruit of the Spirit / Tongues) Spirit of God and hence, they speak in tongues, etcetera... and yet they are not keeping the thus saith the Lord.  However, the Bible clearly states that Jesus told His disciples to keep his commandments if they love Him and then He would "Pray the Father that He send you another Comforter" (John 14:16) who is, of course, the Holy Spirit - the third person of the Godhead.  Moreover, the Bible says that if you are filled with the Spirit of God you will have the fruit of the Spirit ("But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance; against such there is no law"... Galatians 5:22,23).

(Nature of God - Unchanging) God would not change His law for it is an expression of His character and the Lord does not change (Malachi 3:6: "For I am the Lord, I change not"). Moreover in the book of Psalms (89:34) the Bible says: "My covenant will I not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of my mouth." Moreover, the Bible says: "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good".  We are to line up with the requirements of the law.  We should be saying: "I delight to do thy will O my God, yea thy law is within my heart" (Psalm 40:8).  (God Requires Obedience to His Perfect Law) Jesus was perfect and, He said: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).  The Apostle Peter said, in 1 Peter 1:16: "As it is written, be ye holy as I am Holy" - God wants us to be Holy! The whole duty of man is to keep God's commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Was the Sabbath changed in the New Testament?

Many persons have said that the Sabbath was changed from the seventh day of the week (Saturday) to the first day of the week (Sunday) in the New Testament. However, this is just not true.  Many have offered money (and cars, etc.) for anyone that can show even one text that supports that claim. However, the money, etc. has remained unclaimed because ... there is just not any such text in the entire Bible. Some are surprised to learn that ... but its true. Below are the eight scriptural references to the "first day of the week" in the Bible ... judge for yourself ... has the day been changed?

Please read them for yourself:

Matthew 28:1,     Mark 16:2,9,     Luke 24:1,    John 20:1,

Acts 20:7,     1 Corinthians 16:1, 2

Note:

As a small encouragement: All the references and quotations / partial quotes were made from memory by the person that did this page. You can do it too! The Bible says: "I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me." (Phil. 4:13) God Bless! In fact, if you follow the ideas on this page you will do much, much better.

The author of this page is disappointed in the fact that he was unable to give direct (word for word) quotes for all the scripture passages. He is also disappointed that he has had to leave out many passages for which he could not remember the exact scripture reference.  For sure, he continues to pray and study as he knows that he is nowhere near where he should be in scripture memorization. While Jesus is his main inspiration for studying scripture (Jesus simply said "It is written". However, if it was in chapter and verse back then He would quote chapter and verse!) he is also inspired by John Nevin Andrews, the first foreign missionary of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to Europe (Switzerland) ... who knew the entire New Testament from memory ... and many parts of the Old Testament! ... He was called "The Walking Bible"! He was quoted as saying: If for some reason we should lose the entire New Testament I believe I could reproduce it from memory.

Whew! Press on!! Keep studying!!!
